A three-time All-Tri-Valley selection, Weigel helped Saint Bonaventure High School in Ventura to the Omega League championship his senior season and CIF championships as a freshman. He earned Rookie of the Year honors as a freshman, second team All-Tri-Valley as a sophomore and senior and first team honors as a junior. As a senior, he posted five wins in 41.2 innings pitched with a 2.02 ERA and 44 strikeouts for coach Paul Camacho's Saraphs.

A three-sport athlete, Weigel also played four seasons on the basketball team as a center, and one year of football as a defensive end.
