TEMPE, Ariz. – The University of the Pacific baseball team fell in the final game of the series to Arizona State University on Monday night, 8-3.
The Tigers fall to 20-28 overall, while the Sun Devils improve to 21-28 on the season.
After trailing 4-0, the Tigers got on the board and cut into the Sun Devils lead at the top of the fifth. Nate Verlin got the momentum going with a leadoff double to left center. Alex LeForestier was hit by the pitch to take his base.
With one out, Matthew Tarantino singled to right field to load the bases. Keaton Glover stepped up behind him and singled to right center to keep the bases loaded and score Verlin to trail, 4-1. Bradley Jekich followed suit with a single to right field to score LeForestier and trail, 4-2.
In the bottom of the fifth, ASU answered back with two runs to keep the lead, 6-2.
Lucas Halstead tried to keep the hitting trend alive for Pacific with a home run overin the sixth but it was not enough, as Arizona State went on to score one in the seventh and one in the eighth to take the, 8-3 victory.
The Tigers tallied 11 hits on the night with three RBI.
Halstead, Jekich, and Glover all led the offense with one RBI. Halstead and Jekich notched two hits, while Verlin had three hits. Tarantino, LeForestier, Glover, and Kevin Sandri round out the hitters with one hit each.
On the mound, Cooper Casad was charged with the loss after pitching one inning. Eli Lingos picked up the win for the Sun Devils with four strikeouts through six innings pitched.
Pacific closes out the season in its final three-game series against West Coast Conference opponent Brigham Young University on Thursday, May 17 through Saturday, May 19 in Provo, Utah. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
