Hjorth advances to second round in Eugene

Pacific men's tennis opened the Oregon Duck Invitational today by picking up a win in singles action on the day from freshman Philip Hjorth.

Doubles play:

  • Just one duo competed for the Tigers in the team of freshman Philip Hjorth and junior Ross Watson. Hjorth and Watson enjoyed an opening round bye but fell to Portland's duo of Niklas Oberg and Andrew Newell In the second after a close match, 8-6.

Singles play:

  • In singles, Hjorth picked up a first-round win over Boise State's Wyatt Demulling despite a first set loss, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2. He will take on Portland State's Matteo Fortini in the second-round tomorrow.
  • Watson fell in three sets in his opening match to Portland's Sema Pankin 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-1. Tomorrow, he will take on Lucas Castelo Branco in the consolation bracket.
  • Nathan Hampton fell in the first round to the Portland's Eleftherios Neos in straight sets. Tomorrow, he will take on Portland State's Tommy Edwards in the consolation bracket.
