#5 Water Polo Heads To MPSF Invite

STOCKTON, Calif. - The No. 5 Pacific men's water polo team heads to the MPSF Invitational, this weekend in Los Angeles. The annual SoCal tournament is being co-hosted by Southern California and Loyola Marymount.

Pacific will open play on Friday at LMU's Burns Recreation Center against No. 13 UC San Diego at 4 p.m.

On Saturday, the Tigers will face either No. 4 UCLA or No. 20 Loyola Marymount. A win on Friday would put Pacific in the 10:15 a.m. game at USC's Uytengsu Aquatics Center, while a loss would mean staying at Burns Rec Center and a 9:20 a.m. start time.

The Tigers' second game on Saturday would fall between 1 p.m. and 3:15 p.m., as Pacific would face one of No. 1 Cal,  No. 8 UC Davis, No. 9 Pepperdine or Air Force.

Pacific will wrap the MPSF Invitational on Sunday with one game, site and time to be determined.

The Tigers remained the unanimous number five in this week's CWPA Top 20 released Wednesday.

The Tigers have scored 173 goals in nine games this season, including 75 in four games last weekend at the Aggie Roundup. Pacific is averaging 19.22 goals per game, which is ahead of the record pace set by the 2013 Tigers, who averaged 16.5 goals per game and tallied 406 total goals.

Engin Ege Colak leads the Tigers with 30 goals on the season, on 45 shots. Kale Ai has tallied 24 with 17 assists, while Luke Pavillard has scored 23 times and added 19 assists to lead the Tigers in points.

The Tigers have nine players averaging 2.0 points per game or more: Pavillard (42 points), Ai (41), Ben Stevenson (16 goals, 21 assists), Colak (32 points), Devon Thumwood (15 goals, 13 assists), Luis Araya (14 goals, 12 assists), Derek Clappis (10 goals, 12 assists), goalie John Hedges (20 assists), and Andres Schmidt (8 goals, 10 assists).

Defensively, Pacific has been keeping opponents from getting shots on goal by posting 155 steals, an average of 17.22 per game. Hedges leads the Tigers with 49 steals.

Pacific has won three in a row against UC San Diego, including a 13-1 win last season. The Tritons enter the tournament at 3-6 with all six losses coming to the top 13 of the CWPA Top 20.

LMU is 3-4 entering Friday's game against UCLA. The Bruins are 8-0 entering the weekend. Pepperdine is 12-2 on the year and faces UC Davis, who is 7-3.
