Field Hockey Blanks Pioneers

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Sophomore Ash Rutherford and senior Savannah Burns add to their spectacular weekend as they led the Tigers to a 4-0 victory over the Sacred Heart Pioneers Monday morning each adding two goals for Pacific.

The Tigers came out of the gate with offensive prowess as they took their first shot just a few minutes into the game with Rutherford missed just high of the goal. Pacific received their first penalty corner of the game shortly after as van Wyk took the shot, but was saved by the Pioneers goalkeeper.  Newcomer, Karlijn Roijakkers joined in on the offensive strike taking a shot and just missing high.

Pacific would soon take the lead as Savannah Burns fed the ball to Rutherford across the front of the net who smashed it home to give the Tigers the 1-0 advantage.

At the end of the first half, the Tigers kept the Pioneers to only one shot on goal.

The second half belonged to Pacific as Rutherford scored in the 43rd minute, while Burns scored off a penalty corner from Rutherford and Hayley Kilfoil five minutes later.

In the 62nd minute, Emma Leach took the penalty corner for Pacific as Rutherford laid down the stop and Burns took the shot which deflected and found the back of the net putting the Tigers up 3-0.

The Orange and Black outshot the Pioneers 17-5 as Pacific 'keeper Marlise van Tonder recorded the clean sheet for the Tigers making this her second shutout of the season.

The Tigers finish their first road trip 2-1 to bring them to 3-3 on the season. Burns finished the trip with four goals, two assists and eight shots while van Wyk rounded out with three goals, one assist and eleven shots. Rutherford capped off the weekend with two goals and four assists on four shots.

Pacific will begin conference play on Thursday, Sept. 14 as they head to #13 Stanford for an evening matchup slated for 7 p.m. Stats and video will be available via pacifictigers.com.
