Women's Tennis Advances to Singles Consolation Round at Battle in the Bay Classic

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Pacific women's tennis team opened fall play at the Battle in the Bay Classic today, which is taking place at the California Tennis Club in San Francisco.

The Tigers opened the day with a doubles match that featured Maayan Sela and Anneroos Nederstigt taking on the University of San Francisco's Mya Bui and Emily Maxfield. The Pacific pair fell by a score of 8-5.

Nederstigt had to face USF's Maxfield in her single opener for the second-straight season, while Sela faced USC's Rebecca Weissmann. Nederstigt fell to Maxfield, 6-3, 6-3, while Weissmann topped Sela 6-2, 6-2.

"Today we let so many opportunities slip away on the bigger, more important points both in the doubles and singles play. We did a very good job of putting ourselves in positions to win games, but we did not do a good job of closing them out. We have to learn how to play smarter when our players have these opportunities," expressed head coach Tina Samara.

Pacific moved on to the consolation bracket, where Nederstigt also fell short to Fresno State's Juliane Triebe by a score of 6-3, 6-2.

Sela is set to return to the court tomorrow afternoon to take on the Dons' Hanna Borjeson in a 2:30 p.m. consolation match. The winner will move on to the consolation semifinal at 5:00 pm. against the winner between San Francisco's Margarita Treyes and USC's Alexa Corcoleotes.

"The level of this event has improved with pro wild cards on the line. It is a great opportunity for us to learn and grow from our play here," added Samara.
