Gonzales Wins 5000 Meters at Aggie Open

DAVIS, Calif. – The Pacific women's track and field team finished third after totaling 40 points at the UC Davis-hosted Aggie Open on Saturday afternoon. 

TRACK FINISHES
The Tigers earned points in two running events with 30 points earned in the 5,000-meter run to open the day. Jasmine Gonzales won the distance event after clocking a season-best 18:03.29. Anna Martinez also had a good showing in her first race of the 2019 season, finishing third with a time of 20:08.10. Kimberly Villegas also scored for the Tigers with a fifth place finish (20:52.46). 

Naomi Nunis and Mary Alzammar each finished fourth in their respective heads in the 100 meter dash. Nunis 11th overall after a 12.86 finish, which was just under a half-second shy of her program record. Alzammar was 18th with a time of 14.74.

Pacific was also prepared to compete in the 800 meter run and the 200 meter dash, but scratched from both events on the day of competition.

IN THE FIELD
Pacific was very competitive in the field events on Saturday, competing in the shot put, discus, javelin, long jump, and triple jump.

In the shot put Alexia Amo was second with a toss of 29 feet, 10.75 inches. Lilia Guerrero recorded a throw of 23 feet, 4.5 inches. Both hurlers also competed in the discus. Guerrero led the duo with a distance of 71 feet, 10 inches, while Amo recorded a distance of 70 feet, six inches.

Celine Chandler represented the Tigers in the javelin, finishing fifth with a throw of 30.17 meters. That mark broke the program record by seven-hundredths with her previous personal best of 30.10 coming last season at the Woody Wilson Classic, which is hosted at the same venue. 

In the jumps, Megan Rabatan recorded her furthest distance on her first jump, totaling 4.2 meters, 13 feet, 9.5 inches in the long jump. Then in the triple jump, Kailey Espinoza recorded 29 feet, 10.25 inches in her season debut.

 

Pacific will return to action next weekend when it travels again to the North for the Sacramento State Hornet Invitational on Saturday, March 16.
