Volleyball Sweeps Saint Mary's Behind Balanced Attack

Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific volleyball team used a balanced attack to sweep Saint Mary's Saturday night at the Alex G. Spanos Center, 25-16, 25-21, 25-16.

Lexi Elman recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 20 digs, while Andie Shelton added eight kills and 17 assists. Emily Baptista and Ashlyn Fleming tallied eight kills each, while Janie Feldsher tallied seven. Skylar Wine chipped in five kills.

Shelton and Jessica Diederich ran the offense with Diederich posting a game-high 24 assists. Katrin Gotterba tallied 19 digs at libero while Maycie LaBass added nine.

The Tigers hit .321 for the match, with each offensive player hitting .273 or better.

Pacific improved to 5-3 in WCC play and 11-9 overall, while Saint Mary's falls to 8-11 overall and 3-5 in WCC action.

Pacific opened with a 4-1 lead on kills from Baptista and Fleming. A Shelton kill and a block from Shelton and Feldsher stretched the lead to 6-1. The Gaels scratched their way back to within 9-5 before Skylar Wine provided a kill as Pacific led 13-8. The Tigers won a long rally and Shelton added a block for a 17-10 advantage. Batista delivered a kill down the line to prompt a Saint Mary's timeout with the Tigers leading 19-10. Wine found the floor for a 10-point lead. Fleming tallied a kill from the middle, and then hammered home an overpass for a 24-12 lead, and the Tigers took the set on an attack error. Pacific hit .444 for the set to the Gaels' .121 hitting percentage.

In set two, the Gaels jumped out to a 5-1 lead before Shelton tallied a pair of kills and Baptista added one to pul within 5-4. The Gaels stretched the advantage to 10-7, before Fleming answered and Elman closed within 10-9 with a kill down the line. Feldsher and Wine tallied kills, but Saint Mary's stayed in front on a kill from Alexis Salmons, 16-14. Elman knotted the set at 16-16 and the Tigers used a 4-0 run to take an 18-16 lead. The Gaels responded, tying the set at 19-19 on a Lindsey Calvin kill. Elman provided a 21-20 lead, and Shelton followed with a kill to the back row for a two-point edge. Pacific picked up set point on a block from Feldser and Baptista for a 25-21 win and a 2-0 lead at the break.

Fleming got set three started with a kill and after a block and a pair of Elman aces, the Tigers led 4-0. After three straight SMC points, Fleming drilled an overpass for a 5-3 lead. Pacific extended the lead to 10-4 on kills from Elman and Baptista. The Gaels pulled within 11-8 before kills from Feldsher and Wine. Diederich dumped a pass off for a kill as the Tigers led 15-10. After Shelton provided a kill and Elman an ace, Pacific maintained a seven-point lead at 20-13. The Tigers closed in on set point as Fleming tallied a kill, and Elman added a kill and a service error provided match point, 25-16.

Five Tigers were set between 15 and 25 times, with Wine being set 11 times.

Defensively, the Tigers held Saint Mary's to .163 hitting for the match. Calvin led the Gaels with nine digs, while Lindsey Knuden added six.

Pacific iix back in action on Thursday, at home against Santa Clara at 7 p.m. and will face San Francisco on Saturday at noon at the Spanos Center.
