Tigers Drop Five-Set Match at Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. – The Pacific women's volleyball team dropped its final road non-conference matchup on Thursday night after falling to California in five sets (26-24, 25-22, 24-26, 20-25, 11-15).

The Tigers drop to 4-6 on the season, while the Golden Bears improve to 8-2.

Set One

  • With only nine team kills, Pacific was able to still grab the set one victory with the help of five service aces.
  • The Tigers took set one by a narrow margin after the two teams tied the game 14 times.
  • After going down a point at 16-15, Pacific had a three-point run to take an 18-16 edge, but the lead was quickly erased when the Golden Bears answered back with an identical run to take the lead once more. 
  • At 19-19 the Tigers went on a 7-5 run to edge Cal and snag the 26-24 win.

Set Two

  • It was another back-and-forth effort with a tie score on 14 occasions.
  • At 12-12, Cal was able to score five-consecutive points to take a comfortable lead (17-12).
  • The Tigers battled all the way back, going on a 7-2 run at 18-13 to take a late 20-19 lead.
  • Riley Ramsey smashed a kill down the line to secure the Tigers lead, which in turn forced a Cal timeout.
  • The two squads matched point for point, but Pacific's Kaitlyn Lines recorded a kill at 23-22.
  • The Tigers won the next two points and the set following two-straight hitting errors by the Golden Bears.

Set Three

  • The Tigers took a quick 5-2 lead to open the third set, but neither team held a significant edge until Cal played to an 18-14 lead. 
  • Pacific regained control of the set following a 5-0 run that finished with an attack error by Golden Bear's Mima Mirkovic at 19-18.
  • Cal took the lead one more at 20-19 following a solo block by Lauren Forte, but the very next point went to Alex Holt, who hit the ball right through Forte's hands.
  • The score was tied at points 22, 23, and 24 before Cal snagged the final two points on a Cal kill and a Pacific hitting error.

Set Four

  • It was all Golden Bears in the fourth set, earning a very quick 14-4 lead and then extending it to 17-7.
  • Pacific added some pressure late, scoring five straight points at 17-8 to come within five of the Golden Bears. Alex Holt was part of three-consecutive points, earning two blocks and a kill to make it 18-13. 
  • Tigers then battled to its smallest deficit, following a kill by Lauren Cline at 18-14.
  • A service error and an attack error by the Tigers put the Golden Bears back out of reach (20-14).
  • Despite nearly matching point-for-point, the Tigers dropped the set 25-20.

Set Five

  • Cal hit a match-best .333 in the deciding set.
  • The Golden Bears took its momentum from the fourth set into the fifth, opening with a 7-2 run.
  • Pacific came within three points late, following kills by Riley Patterson at 13-10 and 14-11, but Cal put the game away following an attacking error by the Tigers.


Notable Performances:

  • Alex Holt hit a team-high .294, while also totaling a season-best seven blocks (one solo, six assisted). Holt finished with eight kills and just three errors in 17 attempts.
  • Riley Patterson led the Tigers with 13 kills, hitting .290.
  • Riley Ramsey also secured double-digit kills, recording 12 on the night.
  • Jadyn Tubbs was outstanding defensively, topping all players with 23 digs, which ranks second on her season-bests. In addition, Tubbs matched her season-high in service aces with 3 against Cal.
  • Kaitlyn Lines totaled four service aces on the night.
