#11 Women's Water Polo Downs #16 UCSD, 11-5

IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 11 Pacific women's water polo team pulled away from No. 16 UC San Diego Saturday, for an 11-5 win at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational.

Mariana Duarte, Karolina Hlavata, Rachel Krieger, Viktoria Tamas and Ellen Tiedemann each scored twice, while Aelish Guinn added a goal for Pacific.

Alexis Hollinrake recorded 11 saves in net for Pacific.

Hlavata scored off a steal for a 1-0 lead on the Tigers' second possession of the game. Lauren Boyer tied the game at 1-1 for the Tritons with a 6-on-5 goal with 3:54 to go in the first. Hlavata set-up Duarte's power-play goal 53 seconds later as the Tigers took a 2-1 lead. Guinn stretched the lead to 3-1 on a goal with 1:26 remaining, but Kayla Fedler cut the margin to 3-2 before the end of the first quarter.

Krieger opened the second quarter with a goal, and Tamas tacked on for a 5-2 lead, but Alexis Wieseler responded with a goal for UCSD as Pacific carried a 5-3 lead into halftime.

In the third, Tamas' second goal provided a three-goal lead, but Jessee Ransone answered right back for the Tritons. Duarte posted her second for a 7-4 lead and Kyra Christmas set up Krieger's goal with 1:28 left in the third for a four-goal lead.

Tiedemann provided a five-goal lead off an assist from Krieger, and Hlavata scored her second of the game with 6:32 left. Boyer scored for the Lions with 1:57 remaining and Tiedemann rounded out the scoring with 44 seconds to go.

The Tigers improve to 7-5 on the year, and have won five of the last six games. UC San Diego falls to 5-7 on the season.

Pacific will face No. 17 San Jose State at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Corona del Mar Pool in the ninth place game of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational.
