Tigers Open 2018 Season on Saturday

STOCKTON, Calif. – The University of the Pacific cross country team opens its 2018 season in Hawaii and San Francisco.

Looking back…

A trio of Tigers finished first, second, and third to give Pacific a first-place finish overall at the Big Wave Invitational.

Jasmine Gonzales paced the way taking first with a time of 19:32.00, followed by Emma Winkler (19:34.00) and Saira Purhar with a mark of 19:36.00.

The last time the Tigers competed at the USF Invitational was in 2016, where they finished eighth. Emily Wylie led the way with a time of 23:39.9 in the 6K to finish 54th out of 94 competitors. Gonzales crossed the line shortly after Wylie with a time of 23:40. Madison Cote and Emma Winkler finished 62nd and 66th, respectively. Katelyn Breitschwerdt rounded out the Tiger finishers with a time of 25:53.4.

Key runners…

Gonzales and Purhar return for the Tigers in 2018. Gonzales led all sophomore runners last season and posted a sub-22:00 mark in all of her events.

Purhar led all freshman last year set a career-mark of 19:36.00 in the 5K and 22:26.2 mark in the 6K.

The Tigers return seven other runners from last season in Katelyn Breitschwerdt, Daniella Del Toro, Skylar Duignan, Anna Martinez, Haley Silva, Emma Winkler, and Emily Wylie.


Pacific adds one runner to the 2018 season in Kimberly Villegas. Villegas ran track for the Tigers in 2017.

Coach Josh Jones…

Josh Jones enters his 10th season at the helm of the Cross Country team. Last season, Jones guided the Tigers to a season-opening team victory at the Big Wave Invitational and had a number of program-bests for Pacific, including a 21:44.16 mark in the 6K by Jasmine Gonzales. Jones' program is also known for its work in the classroom, snagging All-WCC All-Academic honors and one of 228 programs to bring home the USTFCCCA Team All-Academic Award.
